Aris Zavitsanos, Founder and First President

Aris Zavitsanos was born Velesarios Zavitsanos in the village of Spartohori, Lefkas, Greece on August 15, 1918, youngest of seven children. At the age of 19, he began his lifelong career as an educator by teaching in a one room school house consisting of 40 students of varied ages and grade levels. To this day, he is known as "the Teacher." During World War II, he was imprisoned by the Italian army fro two years. He eventually escaped and fled to mountain areas of Greece, where he fought for the liberation of the country of his birth. His exploits during the war became the subject of a book entitled "The Vindication," soon to be translated into English. Encouraged by this brother and mentor Mitsos Zavitsanos, Aris came to the United States in 1946 as a student. In 1948, he lived with his uncle and sponsor Steve Argyres while attending the University of San Francisco, where he pursued a degree in Education. The following years, he became an instructor of Greek Language with the Defense Language Institute in Monterey. During this time, he met Anne Costakis. Aris knew immediately that Anne was the woman for him. They married in 1950 and had two sons, George and Anthony. During his tenure with the Defense Language Institute, Aris received his master's degree in Political Science from the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies. He was nominated president of the National Federation of Federal Employees teachers union which boasted over 50o members. Aris was ultimately promoted to the position of chairman of the Greek Department, which he held until his retirement 1985. Aris was the catalyst of countless entrepreneurships, political campaigns, and Greek Church endeavors. he co-owned several local area businesses including the Windmill Drive Inn in Watsonville, 24 Hour Steak House, and Lefkas Inc. He also co-owned the Village Corner restaurant in Carmel, which he often used as a political forum for his favorite candidates. Aris also owned the Cannery Row Surf Shop, which he started up for his sons, allowing them pursue their love of surfing while simultaneously learning about business. He was one of the founding fathers of Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Salinas where he served on multiple occasions as both as President and as a Council member. He was instrumental in the creation, evolution and success of the Greek School. Aris was defined by his passion for learning and helping others. Anyone who needed a helping hand or a place to be on a holiday was welcome at the home of Aris and Anne Zavitsanos. His charity and desire to help reaped countless friendships and inspired him to create in 2003, at the age of 85, the Hellenic Cultural Institute. The HCI is a nonprofit group that meets with the goal of providing opportunities to learn by donating scholarships to student. In 2005, they were able to reward scholarships to five high school graduates in of Monterey and Santa Cruz areas. From humble beginnings, the Institute has grown to 195 members and continues to increase. Aris Zavitsanos died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday 27 at the age of 87, at the home he built and reside in for the last 45 years with Anne, his loving wife of 55 years at his side.

Nick Papadakis, President
Nick Papadakis,a native of Athens,Greece, moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1977. He is the Executive Director of the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments, a regional long-range planning organization concerned with the economic,social and environmental well being of the people in Monterey,San Benito and Santa Cruz counties and the cities within those counties. He is a member of numerous local, state and national associations in the areas of planning and regional governance. He has a BA degree in Mathematics and did graduate work in Puplic Administration at the California State University, Long Beach. An amateur chef, he can been seen attempting to organize the bbq crews at various Greek festivals.

Fotis Papoulias, 2nd Vice-President
Fotis is a native of Greece and is a Professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Naval and Systems Engineering. He came to the U.S. in 1983 for his postgraduate studies and moved to Monterey in 1989. Besides engineering, he enjoys history, as well as good company (most notably during HCI board meeting and cultural events), food (especially when made by the master-chef and President Nick) and wine (particularly when made by the master-winemaker and Treasurer Gus).
 
Gus Scourkes, Treasurer
Gus was born in Lincoln, CA but moved to San Francisco at an early age. He served in WWII including the European Theatre. He got his BS Degree from University of San Francisco in 1949 and shortly afterwards he started his employment with Pacific Gas and Electric Co. He continued his advance studies and became a Division Personnel Manager in Marysville, CA. He was elected to city council of Yuba City in 1968 and became Vice Mayor. He came to Salinas in 1971 and he retired in 1986. Gus has volunteered for service in a number of organizations. His home-made wine can be found on many occasions and HCI events.
 
Carla Pickerill, Secretary
Carla fell in love with the Greek culture during her first trip to Greece in 1996. Since then, she and her husband, "Zorba", have made four trips back. Areas they have toured include the Peloponese Pensinsula, Thessaly, Crete, and the Cyclades and Dodecanese Islands. "If there is a taverna playing
traditional Greek music,we are there!" is their moto. Carla and "Zorba" have performed with the Greek Village Dancers of the Monterey Pensinsula since 1998. Carlas' other interests include Middle Eastern Dance, classical guitar, and Greek cooking. Carla is employed at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital as a
registered nurse.

Mary Alice Cerrito Fettis, Member
Mary Alice is a native of Monterey. Her family was in the restaurant business locally for over 50 years. Her love of Greek culture and Greece was ignited as a child by her exposure to the local Greeks, their food, and her love of history. As a flight attendant she was able to visit Greece frequently and explore its treasures. She, her Greek-American husband, Nick, and their son enjoy learning to cook old family Greek recipes from his yiayia. Over the years Mary Alice has been involved with and been on the boards of several food and wine organizations which have given her a deep appreciation for the foods and beverages of Greece. Mary Alice enjoys entertaining and combining her own rich Basque and Sicilian background with the Greek influences. Mary Alice has been a realtor with Pan American Real Estate in Carmel for over 20 years which is also owned by a Greek-American.

Dennis Osmer , Member
Dennis Osmer is a native of Watsonville , California and has been fortunate enough to experience a high degree of Greek culture and people. He is the former Mayor of Watsonville and currently represents District 4 on the Santa Cruz County Planning Commission. He is an Associate Board Member for Bay Federal Credit Union, serving the Monterey bay area. He and his wife Laurie traveled to Greece for the first time  in the summer of 2005 . It was an excellent trip in spite of missing a visit to Meganissi.  They have two adult children, Brendan and Dorie. He works as the Executive Director of Central Coast Energy Services, Inc. Dennis is a junior chef in training in the 10 year Barbecue Program at the Greek Festivals. His current Greek cultural activities are learning the alphabet and playing the komboloi.
Dennis likes to travel and claims that the Irish are more handsome than the Greeks - you be the judge on that! (Link opens in new window).
